Event Rigging at Goodwood Festival of Speed
In 2022, The Event Business tasked us with not only constructing the Jaguar Land Rover stand at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but also with building the metal framework for a feature area that showcased a Range Rover and other audio and video aspects.
The standout element of this project? A visually striking setup where we rigged the Range Rover with digital screens, creating a stunning waterfall simulation that perfectly aligned with The Event Business’s and JLR’s vision, making the display a memorable highlight of the festival.
“The 2022 Goodwood was the 24th edition & the festival attracte 200,000 attendees”
Objectives
The key goals of the project were to:
Bring The Event Business and Jaguar Land Rover's vision to life: Create a structure that fulfilled The Event Business and JLR’s creative concept.
Collaborative Execution: Work closely with other creatives to deliver this one-of-a-kind visual experience.
Visually Striking and Secure Design: Build a structure that was not only visually impressive but also technically sound.
Safe and Stable Rigging for the Range Rover: Design a rigging structure strong enough to support the Range Rover, while integrating video wall elements seamlessly, without compromising safety or stability.
Approach & Solutions
To bring structure to life we took a meticulous and collaborative approach with other experts to ensure both safety and a visual impact. Here’s how we did it:
Technical Planning and Structural Design
We started with detailed technical drawings and precise structural calculations to ensure the steel framework could securely hold both the Range Rover and the large video wall by Branchout Productions. This included calculating the fixing points where the car would be attached to the steel structure. This step was crucial to guarantee the entire setup was solid and safe while providing the desired visual impact.On-Site Construction and Rigging
Once the structural plans were in place, we transported the steel framework to the site. Working alongside Southern Cranes, we handled the rigging and crane operations to lift both the car and the steelwork into position with precision. Safety was paramount during this phase, with our team carefully coordinating every lift to ensure everything was perfectly aligned.
Digital Screen Integration for an Immersive Experience
To make the display stand out, we helped integrated digital screens into the metalwork structure, that created the illusion of a waterfall.Safety and Precision
Safety was our top priority throughout the project. The rigging of a large vehicle, combined with digital elements, required careful attention to detail. We adhered to strict safety protocols, ensuring that both the structure and the display were secure, stable, and compliant with event regulations. Our detailed execution plan allowed us to achieve both the visual and safety goals without compromise.
Challenges We Faced
Structural Complexity
Rigging a large vehicle like the
Range Rover, alongside integrating digital screens, required precise engineering. The challenge involved understanding the exact weights, materials, and their capabilities to construct a secure framework. The structure needed to support both the vehicle and the technology without compromising safety or stability. Our team applied technical expertise in engineering and materials science to ensure the rig was not only strong but also visually impressive, creating a seamless blend of structural integrity and cutting-edge design.Tight Event Timeline
With a limited window to get everything set up on-site, we had to move quickly and efficiently. Despite the pressure, we ensured the rigging was completed on time without cutting any corners on quality or safety.
Outdoor Environment
Working outdoors introduced its own set of challenges, particularly with the unpredictable weather. We had to stay flexible and prepared for any conditions to ensure the display was ready and secure, regardless of what nature threw our way.Uneven Ground and Self-Levelling
The ground at the event site wasn’t perfectly level, so we had to account for that by using self-levelling techniques to make sure the display was stable and visually aligned.
Vehicle Protection
Ensuring the Range Rover wasn’t damaged during the rigging process was a top priority. We used careful handling and protective measures to make sure the vehicle remained in pristine condition throughout the setup.
Results and Key Takeaway
The Range Rover display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed was a standout success, both visually and technically.
Innovation in Rigging and Design
We successfully combined structural engineering with digital elements, creating an eye-catching and engaging display.Collaboration for Success
Working closely with other creative teams allowed us to deliver the structure seamlessly for The Event Business and JLR.Attention to Detail and Safety
Every aspect of the project was executed with precision, from the structural design to the cleaning and presentation of the vehicle.
This project not only elevated Range Rover’s presence at the event but also demonstrated our ability to deliver cutting-edge solutions for complex event installations.
